As many of you know, I am a Texan by birth. I was born and raised in a small town right outside of Houston, Texas. George Strait, Bluebell Ice Cream, hot summers, and What-A-Burger were a huge part of my upbringing. No, we don’t all ride horses, or have an oil well in our backyard (questions we are actually asked in other parts of the world), but we do have a saying there, “Texas Strong”. It stems from the idea that Texans can handle anything that is thrown at them. Texans are proud of that, and will let you know, loudly, anytime it is in question!
I, of course, live in the big town of Cleveland now. The Vols and mountain views have become a significantly larger part of my life than they were before, but I still carry around the label of “ Texan”. If anything, I’m more proud of my hometown than ever.
I was raised truly believing that the region of the country in which I was born entitled me to more strength and courage than someone born anywhere else. Now, before you get aggravated, I understand that this thinking is completely absurd in the natural sense. But, when we are born again, we are born into the Kingdom of God. Our nationality, our identity, our very inner self is completely transformed. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that, in Christ, we are a completely new creation. No longer are we citizens of this world, but Citizens of Heaven. Heavenites, if you will.
Just as I was raised to believe that as Texans we are entitled to things certain things, in our new identity as Heavenites, we hold and carry things that the rest of the world around us doesn’t have access to. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control, just to name a few (Gal. 5).
Imagine a child is born, and this child’s parents spare no expense in preparing for their kid’s future.
College: paid off.
Jobs: lined up.
Houses: furnished and waiting.
All the money they’ll ever need: in a bank account with their name on it.
That is how it is when we are born into the Kingdom of God.
We are the most well taken care of kids in the universe. Father God sets us up and hands us everything we could possibly need to live our best lives here on earth. You, as a child of the most high, are set up for success just because of the identity you were given at your (second) birth. WOW!
You carry in yourself enough strength, ability, courage, and uniqueness to make even the “Texas strong” Texan jealous. Imagine that.
Go ahead, clap for joy! That’s good news!
So let’s flaunt it like a Texan would.
Let’s make it known that we are “ Heaven Strong”. Everywhere we go, let’s bring a little Heaven with us. Let’s proudly wear our identity on our sleeves, and talk about it every chance we get. Let’s allow others to see how amazing our Father is so they will want to be Heavenites as well!
Texas (and the whole earth) will fade away. Nothing here in this world is eternal, only the Kingdom of God.
“But our citizenship is in Heaven, from which we also eagerly await for our savior, the Lord, Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20
