It amazes me the way God speaks to us sometimes. I was cleaning up a mess on my kitchen floor a few weeks ago when He showed me something. As I was close to the ground, my one year old took notice and toddled over joyfully. In his mind, I must have been on the floor for the sole purpose of amusing him. I smiled and talked to him as he walked but then turned my attention again to the mess. When he arrived, he excitedly patted my back and giggled. He then leaned over sideways to look at my face. Still not satisfied, he grabbed both sides of my face with his hands and turned it to face his. Once we were nose to nose, he let out a satisfied “Heeey!” All he wanted was face time with his mom. He didn’t care that I was cleaning the floor to make a cleaner play environment for him. He just wanted me.
Father God is the same way. Just like a young child wants to spend time with his mother, He just wants to spend time with us, His kids. What we’re “doing” for God doesn’t matter as much as the time we are spending in His presence. According to Luke 10, that is the only thing worth being concerned about.
When Jesus visited Martha and Mary, Martha was caught up in preparing a big meal for Jesus (and probably others) while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to Him teach. Martha was doing something good, but she got distracted by what she was doing and forgot to spend time with the One for Whom she was doing it. When she asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her, Jesus told her, “There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
When my son lovingly turned my face toward his, it was a reminder to stop working for a minute and enjoy a precious moment with him. Take a moment to enjoy the awesome presence of your Heavenly Father. He longs to spend time with you.
